All you will need is a large balloon and a pen or marker.
Blow the balloon up so that it is about the size of a tennis ball, but do not tie it off. Use a pen or marker to draw an X and a wave like this on the balloon. Draw the peaks on your wave close together. Be careful not to pop the balloon as you draw.

Next, add some more air to the balloon so that it gets bigger. Keep blowing it up until is two or three times bigger than it was in Step 1. Notice what happens to the squiggly line you drew as the balloon is stretched.

Suppose the universe was NOT expanding and that distances in the universe stayed constant. Also, suppose the X on your balloon represents a distant galaxy. Would radiation from that galaxy look the same today as it did 1,000 years ago if the universe was NOT expanding? Explain your answer.
With modern telescope technology, we can observe that radiation from many distant galaxies does NOT look the same as it did in the past. As time progresses, the radiation becomes more redshifted. What does this mean, and how does your balloon experiment show this idea?
